Awareness around the Holidays

This year is flying by so quickly! It is November already! Next week kicks off  the official start of the holiday season, Thanksgiving! This is one of my most favorite times of the year. I enjoy spending time with loved ones. As I begin yet another holiday season, I am reminded that this is not a pleasant time of year for many people. Instead of joy and happiness, individuals may experience an increased sense of loss, depression and overwhelming stress.  How do we not only help ourselves deal with these emotions but how do we support others in need? The Mayo Clinic provides amazing tips for dealing with holiday depression and stress. Personally, one of the biggest ways I tackle holiday stress and depression is through giving. This is accomplished through charity and volunteering. My nonprofit organization, Global Mentality volunteers with several food banks and other nonprofit organizations to serve food to the needy and homeless. We also participate in adopting families for Christmas with the Augusta Biker’s Association. It has been an amazing year for us and we pay it forward by giving to others. Rather or not you suffer from depression or stress directly, I encourage you to think of ways that you can assist others and yourself during the holidays. Pay it forward this holiday season. If you are located in the Augusta area, below are additional resources for assistance. Please feel free to comment and post additional resources. I pray that despite your situation, your holiday season turns out to be an amazing one.

Thank you,

Kimberly Natson RN, MSN
