Preceptorship Services for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Students

We provide preceptorship services for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner students who need to complete clinical hours.

In psychiatric mental health nursing, a preceptorship refers to a structured and supervised learning experience where a Registered Nurse is paired with an experienced and knowledgeable Psychiatric Nurse, known as a preceptor. The preceptor acts as a mentor, guiding and supporting the Registered Nurse in developing the necessary clinical skills, knowledge, and professional attributes required to provide safe and effective psychiatric care.

During a preceptorship, the Registered Nurse has the opportunity to observe and actively participate in various aspects of psychiatric mental health nursing practice. This can include conducting assessments, developing care plans, administering medications, providing therapeutic interventions, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, and managing challenging situations that arise in mental health settings.

The preceptorship experience is usually individualized and tailored to meet the specific learning needs of the Registered Nurse. The preceptor provides ongoing feedback, guidance, and constructive evaluation to facilitate the development of clinical competence and critical thinking skills. They may also facilitate discussions, share their expertise, and provide resources to enhance the Registered Nurse’s understanding of psychiatric disorders, therapeutic approaches, and evidence-based interventions.

Preceptorships in psychiatric mental health nursing aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge gained in nursing education programs and the practical application of that knowledge in a clinical setting. The ultimate goal is to help the Registered Nurse develop the confidence and competence required to practice independently as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse.
